The Child In Time by Ian McEwan. Signed first edition, first impression. Octavo. 220pp. This book is in very good condition. The black cloth boards are near fine, with the front board being slightly bowed. The spine is near fine, with a slight lean. The gilt titling to the spine is bright. The top face of the text block is foxed. The fore face has very light foxing. The front and rear free end papers are lightly foxed. Otherwise the pages are clean and the binding is tight. The dust jacket is in very good condition, with some minor bumping to the edges and one small dent to the front cover. The spine has been sunned. The front flap has at some stage been folded over on itself so there is a crease mark along the length of the flap. The dust jacket is unclipped.

The Child in Time opens with a harrowing event. Stephen Lewis, a successful author of children's books, takes his 3-year-old daughter on a routine Saturday morning trip to the supermarket. While waiting in line, his attention is distracted and his daughter is kidnapped. Just like that. From there, Lewis spirals into bereavement that has effects on his relationship with his wife, his psyche and time itself: "It was a wonder there could be so much movement, so much purpose, all the time. He himself had none." This beautifully haunting book won a 1987 Whitbread Prize.
