At the bottom of page 335, either side of the page number, is the handwritten note "Pages" 335 "and 336 have been transposed". Sally Law and her sisters Jane and Lizzie travel out to China from their home in Brighton after their father has re-married a girl of nearly their own age. Lizzie's husband is to be a missionary but Sally and Jane are determined to make their own, new lives in a new country. The story follows not only the histories of the three girls, their marriages, happinesses and sorrows, but also the history of the development of Shanghai and the English settlements in China at the zenith of Britain's imperialism.
