Add to basketFirst edition, inscribed on first free endpaper. 410pp. 8vo. A socially forward-thinking novel with serious, often didactic, commentary on mental health, feminism, and concepts of independence, which perhaps led it to be one of Wells' less financially successful books. At the time it was released, he was still involved with fellow author Rebecca West, with whom he had commenced an affair ten years prior. The two lovers had given each other pet names; West was "Panther," and Wells' sobriquet was "Jaguar," which he used here as part of his inscription to her: "Rebecca / from / J." Crimson cloth, stamped decoratively on boards, in gilt on spine. Deep red topstain. Slightly cocked, spine sunned, corners lightly bumped, a few small marks on rear First edition, inscribed on first free endpaper.
