Signed by Nicholson to the Cambridge bookseller Gustave David (1860-1936). Known to all, Gustave David was one of Cambridge's enduring personalities. In 1926 William Nicholson executed his well-known drawing of David sitting on a crate at his market stall near Great St. Mary's church. Robin Halwas wrote of him that: "David had a recognisable influence on the intellectual life of of the University and a legendary role in developing the libraries of several generations of Cambridge bibliophiles [-] Towards the end of David's career the University offered him in recognition of the 'conspicuous services he has rendered the cause of humane letters' either an honorary MA or a luncheon in the hall of Trinity College; he chose the latter." A detail of Nicholson's drawing of David was used as the frontis for the valedictory volume 'David of Cambridge. Some Appreciations.' which included contributions from T.R. Glover, Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, H.F. Stewart, W.H.D. Rouse and S.C. Roberts. [Cambridge University Press, 1937].
