George James Guthrie was a Scottish-born, British surgeon. He served in the Napoleonic wars, in the Peninsular Campaign and was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. "For nearly thirty years Guthrie gave free surgical lectures to medical officers of the Royal Army, Royal Navy, and East India Company. These seven lectures on excision of the head of the arm, thigh bone, elbow joint, and diseases the Royal Army was exposed to during the Spanish campaigns of 1811 and 1812, were delivered at the Westminster Hospital between 1836 and 1838" - Heirs of Hippocrates 1414 (citing 1839 American ed.).
