About this Item
Octavo, 314pp., illustrated. A very good copy in the publisher's reddish-brown boards with mild edgewear, and foxing to the edges. Internally clean. In a very good dust jacket with some rubbing and short tears, gently sunned on the spine. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by co-author Dick Gregory on the front free endpaper "To Jim." Illegible owner's name on the front paste-down. An interesting copy, which also contains a lengthy inscription on the half-title page from Robert Byron Watson to Dolores French, quoting a verse from Ivan Andreyevich Krylov. Watson was a purported witness to a conversation between two art gallery owners in Atlanta (Harold Eugene Purcell and Jerry Adams), and some of their associates, about a plot to assassinate Martin Luther King, Jr. The conversation took place exactly one week before King's murder in Memphis. The FBI later determined that Watson's story was not credible, though it's worth noting that there remain a number of doubts in certain quarters about whether the convicted assassin, James Earl Ray, was solely responsible for King's murder. Dolores French, the recipient, was a high-profile Atlanta prostitute, who was for a time married to Atlanta civil rights and criminal defence attorney Michael Hauptman. An interesting copy of this deep dive into various alternative theories of the King Assassination, scarce signed by Gregory, and with a most interesting gift inscription from someone connected to the investigation.
