About this Item
First Edition (NAP). In English and Spanish. This book likely had a very small printing. There is only one other copy for sale anywhere. Once listed, my copy will be the Only signed copy for sale on the Internet. The inscription is on the blank verso of the first front end paper. It reads: 'To Mady & Lew Corbin-- a token & a souvenir. Charles Coiro, Escazu 2001.' Mr. Coiro was living in Costa Rica in 2001. He was born in New York in 1929. He studied at Columbia University and graduated from Pratt Institute in 1958. He taught at Pratt Institute for four years. As you can see from the photos, the black covers are quite clean. There's only light wear, some scuffing to the right and left of the bottom edge of the spine, a little of the same on the bottom edges, speck-sized rubbing at a few corners, and light bumping at the top edge of the spine. The page edges are very clean. And so are the pages in the book. You will see toning (common with glossy paper) at the margins where they are white (many of the margins are black), but the pages are exceptionally clean. The illustrations are quite varied and interesting. There's a section of sculptures that is titled Portraits. They include sculptures of faces, torsos, and full bodies in black and white. The next section is titled Totemic, Mythic, Religious and here some of the works are quite abstract, others are figurative. The next section is titled Eros and here the sculptures are rendered in color. That's also the case with many of the sculptures in the next section titled Abstract, and in the following one, titled Lyrical where most are in color. There's a two-page Annex with smaller color photographs of some of the artist's work, also a full-page black-and-white photograph of a sculpture titled Frustration and a facing page Sketch from 1987. The last few pages contain A List of Sculptures, A List of Individual Exhibits and a List of Group Exhibits. There is an Index and a Biography. There are a handful of fold-out illustrations throughout the book. The artist is also a poet and there are around a dozen or so poems accompanying some of the works. The book is dedicated to Mr. Coiro's wife, the fashion designer Urleene Chaplain. The inside covers and end papers are purple. There's a little bit of color fading on parts of them, quite minor. They are very clean. Getting back to the pages, I'm not seeing any creasing (the tissue guard between the signed page and the title page does have a little bit of creasing) on any of the pages. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And with the exception of the artist's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The dust jacket is in very solid condition. I've had it in a fitted protective cover for as long as I've owned the book, which goes back a number of years. I just removed it to better examine the jacket and to avoid glare in the photos. I'll replace it with a new protective cover after the photos are taken. The jacket is very clean. There's a thin 1 1/4" tear off the front top edge. There's a little bit of the white clouding on the rear cover that you often see on black jackets. There's a tiny bit of scuffing off the top and bottom edges of the spine. There are a few light surface scratches. The flaps are in very good shape. They don't have any print on them.
