Add to basketCold Summer Wind takes the reader down three of the major rivers of Canada’s vast barren lands –
- The entire 920 miles of the Kazan River system from Snowbird Lake to Baker Lake, then out through Chesterfield Inlet into Hudson Bay.
- The Elk River and the Thelon River, through the heart of the Thelon Game Sanctuary
- The wild and seldom-traveled Back River, from Muskox Rapids to within ninety miles of Chantrey Inlet on the Arctic Ocean, in the land of the midnight sun.
This is an action book! And action the Kleins had, shooting through boiling rapids and swirling white water, or while bucking high seas on some of the larger lakes.
In Cold Summer Wind, the author shares the sights and sounds, the excitement, the danger…and the unforgettable slendor of Canada’s far north:
- The phenomenon of mirages and the Ross Light
- The migrations of the Barren Lands caribou
- The Barren Ground grizzly
- Tundra wolves
- Muskoxen
- Chesterfield Inlet tides
- Ferocious insects
- Caught in a whirlpool
- The Old North Trail
- The King of the Barrens
- Flora and fauna
- The Legendary John Hornby
- Missionary of the Barrens, Joseph Buliard, O.M.I.
He is a member of the American Canoe Association, the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association, the Audubon Society, as well as several other groups and organizations.

Darrell Klein, the author’s son, is also an active outdoorsman who canoes, golfs, hunts with bow and arrow, and spends a lot of time with his family. He is now the president and general manager of the family fertilizer business with its four locations in Michigan’s lower peninsula.
