Description:
Octavo. 211 pp. First edition, first printing. Signed and inscribed by Spender. In publisher's cloth, lacking the dust jacket. Only light rubbing to the extremities; offsetting to the endpapers else clean but for some light and even toning. This copy inscribed by Spender on the half title: "To dear Sylvia with admiration and with thanks for her patient attention which I have felt present over many years. From Stephen Spender Nov 28 1956." An earlier bookseller has penciled on the front flyleaf that the recipient was Sylvia Beach. While we can't confirm this, certainly the depth of the message suggests this is indeed presented to Beach. Like most everyone in that era, Spender had long been been associated with her and Shakespeare & Company, the de facto center of the artistic world between the Wars. Seller Inventory # 9681
