A collection of five plays bound together in contemporary half calf with gilt decorations to the spine, the binding is lightly rubbed. Two of the works are inscribed by the author. The Wife, A Tale of Mantua, Edward Moxon London 1836 the seventh edition; Caius Gracchus, A Tragedy; Glasgow Reid and Henderson 1833, first edition, inscribed by the author to Viscount Shayford???; Virginius, A Tragedy Reid and Henderson Glasgow 1824, the sixth edition, inscribed by the author to the same recipient; The Lady of Lyons or Love and Pride, Saunders and Otley, London 1838 the fifth edition AND The Love Chase a Comedy in Five Acts , Edward Moxon, London 1838, the third edition. James Sheridan Knowles (12 May 1784 – 30 November 1862) was a Cork born Irish dramatist and actor. His talents secured him the friendship of William Hazlitt, who introduced him to Charles Lamb and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Scarce, signed works by Knowles seldom appear on the market.
