Original wraps with Saudi map to the front 17x24cm. xiii, 110pp with texts in English and summaries in Arabic, including colour photos, b/w maps and plans. Wraps very good, lightly worn with small "SA" sticker to the front. Scarce. Worldcat also records a second edition in English and German, published in 1984. Interiors very good with author's inscription to the half title ("To Dr Ozer with Regards"). This was published by the University of Riyadh (a note to the front states its name was changed to King Saud University while the book was being printed). The editor, Zohair Sebai, was at this time Professor of Community Medicine, Dean, Abha Faculty of Medicine. The project was prompted by realisation that knowledge of health problems and community needs in the rural areas of Saudi Arabia was not keeping pace with the Kingdom's rapid social and economic development. It followed similar community diagnosis and health services programme visits to Taima (1976), Khulais (1977), Riyadh City (1978) and Tamnia (1979). It was conducted by a team from Riyadh University's Medical Faculty over a 2 week period in 1980. The team included 30 students, 12 faculty staff members, 6 specialists from various health organisations, and 22 nurses, health assistants and local teachers. The exercise was also an innovative way of providing field training in epidemiology and community health. Two villages in Qasim Province, Ain and Khusaiba, were selected based on their proximity to Breida, existence of a health centre as a base, suitable size, presence of boys' schools, and willingness to participate. Once local permission was obtained, surveys were carried out. The papers included here are arranged into sections on the health status of children, socioeconomic and environmental factors, and the health care delivery system, with review and summary. The maps show the location of Qasim in Saudi Arabia, Qasim Region, Ain and Khusaiba (the latter prepared by village schoolteachers to identify households before enumeration took place).
