First Edition -- inscribed by both A.J. and Carrie Balaban with an interesting association -- of this biography of early 20th century movie theater impresario A.J. Balaban. The Chicago-based Balaban originated the concept of the movie palace, the grand theaters that integrated orchestras and live acts into the presentation of films. This copy is inscribed by A.J. Balaban and his wife and biographer Carrie to Jules Rubens, a founder of one of the celebrated (and surviving) movie palaces of the era, the Rialto Square Theater in Joliet, Ill. And, yes, contemporary actor Bob Balaban is related. A.J. and Carrie were Bob's aunt and uncle. 240 pages, blue cloth, illustrated. Includes a 70-page reproduction of a tribute sectiion devoted to A.J. Balaban that had been published by Variety in 1929 that is housed in a pocket at back. No dust jacket. The book has a couple nicks on the front cover, some foxing at edges and on the spine, and a bit of edge wear.
