1st edition. Hardcover. Excellent blue cloth with silver spine lettering, pages clean, some small edge-spotting to front and lower text blocks. The dustwrapper is clean, not price-clipped, some small chips at spine ends and corners. Signed card mounted on the title page. The author's most famous work, following the lives of a group of Royal Navy sailors in the Battle of the Atlantic during the Second World War, based on his own experiences of serving in corvettes and frigates in the North Atlantic. Made into the successful film of the same name starring Jack Hawkins and Donald Sinden. One of the finest sea stories, this is a rare first impression with the author's signature thus.
