Rey and Margaret Rey, a Jewish German-born couple who became influential figures in twentieth-century childrenā s literature, are best known for creating the Curious George series, whose enduring appeal rests on its blend of gentle humor, visual clarity, and narrative curiosity. The character first appeared in 1939 in the French book Rafi et les 9 singes, developed while the Reys were living in Paris. Following the Nazi invasion in June 1940, they fled the city on bicycles they assembled from spare parts, carrying with them the manuscript and drawings of their mischievous monkey; their escape took them through Spain and Portugal to the United States later that year. Settling in New York, they completed publication arrangements, and Curious George was formally introduced to American readers in 1941, marking the beginning of a series that would become a cornerstone of modern picture-book culture.
