About this Item
1st Printing. Signed. 80 pages. Published in 2004. Artist Book. One of the most unusually beautiful art and photography books of our time. Limited Edition of 1000 copies. Published in a small and limited print run as a hardcover original only. The Limited Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Jack Woody: Regular-sized volumes format in rectangular shape. The first volume is devoted to the paintings, the second, to the photographs. Hard pictorial boards, as issued. Art and photography by David Deutsch. Essay, "Haunts of Assimilation", by Laurence A. Rickels. The essay is appropriately, also in two parts and appended at the end of each volume. Black cloth slipcase with titles embossed on spine. Printed on glossy stock paper to the highest standards. Without DJ's, as issued. Presents David Deutsch's "Paintings/Photographs". The hauntingly powerful imagery of Deutsch as artist and as photographer. The photographs are stark aerial shots of various suburban homes, buildings, and their surrounding environments, taken at night. Deutsch himself likens them to surveillance photographs from a satellite or a hidden camera. The paintings are softly lit renderings of homes, panoramic landscapes, and people in the streets, luminous and shadowy at the same time, complete yet also somehow unfinished. As soon as they gain clarity, the images become elusive again, evidence "that rests not on what we see but on what we forget" (Laurence A. Rickels). Born, raised, and educated in Beverly Hills, David Deutsch was discouraged by his wealthy family to pursue an artistic career. To his credit, he would not talk about what appears to have been a difficult childhood and adolescence. He became a world-class economist and joined the Peace Corps before moving to New York to become an artist. Best-known for his conceptual yet figurative paintings, his lifelong subject is "virtual nothingness", that which "appears vast and endlessly deep, that which is perceived but is not obviously visible". He is an artist with a loyal cult following and is associated with such major figures as Robert Mangold, Keith Sonnier, and Brice Marden. To discover his work is to experience the power of art as revelation all over again. An absolute "must-have" title for David Deutsch collectors. This is a copy of the Limited Edition of 1000 copies. It is very prominently and beautifully signed in black pen on the title page of both volumes by David Deutsch. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the Limited Edition available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: David Deutsch did NOT sign most copies. A rare signed copy thus. 45 color, 40 duotone plates. One of the greatest American artist/photographers of our time. A flawless copy.
