About this Item
1st Printing. Signed. 458 pages. Published in 1973. The author's fourth collection of film criticism. Now widely regarded as Pauline Kael's single best collection. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, of which there are very many. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. Presents Pauline Kael's "Deeper Into Movies". Film - or the movies, as she preferred to call them - as THE most seductive, energetic, and irresistible art form of our time. Movies and Pauline Kael, who treated her connection to the medium as an erotic encounter, were meant for each other: "No one wrote about the movies with more vim, vinegar, and piercing intelligence than fearless New Yorker Magazine critic Pauline Kael, who established the movie review as a form of literature with the potential for social commentary. Encapsulates Kael's ardor and insights, flinty disposition, uncanny sensibility, and unabashed passion for Pop culture. A Californian who abandoned law school to write, Kael loved the gamble of writing and recognized that she was ideally suited for criticism, an art she enlivened and enriched with her dynamic, often devastating, and always witty critiques and pronouncements. She neatly parses the work of various directors and actors, muses over favorite films, skewers television, decries the decay of the movie industry, and expresses regret that she didn't write more about the eroticism of film. Celebrates Kael's acumen and effervescence" (Donna Seaman). Well, Pauline Kael herself came to regret her intimate association with Pop because she was always just as smitten and committed to High Art. While Hollywood energies - and American culture itself - can finally only be understood and appreciated through the prism of the Pop sensibility, the European and Asian art films she also loved could only be seen, understood, and loved through the lens of High Culture. This ongoing tension between High and Pop is precisely what makes "Deeper Into Movies" so absorbing and illuminating. An absolute "must-have" title for Pauline Kael collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed and inscribed in blue pen-marker by the author: "Kelly Lang, I hope you've had some fun with it. Best, Pauline Kael". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The recipient, who is named, was the acclaimed Los Angeles TV news reporter, NBC talk show host, best-selling mystery novelist, and also wife of William Friedkin, the great film director. She interviewed Pauline Kael during the latter's promotional appearance for the book. This title is a great collection. This is the only such Association Copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and despite its imperfection (wear and creasing on the fragile DJ) is still in fine condition overall: Every single internal page is clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: Copies available online have very serious flaws (because they were avidly read) or are in multiple subsequent printings. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. Winner of the National Book Award in 1973 for "Deeper Into Movies", the first book of film criticism recognized and honored as such. The most influential film critic of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER PAULINE KAEL TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0316481769.
