About this Item
First edition. Inscribed by the author on the front free fly leaf, "To Bob Kalter: With gratitude for his splendid work in our joint struggle to create for the State of New Jersey its rightful place in the sun! Your Friend, Sidney Kingsley, Dec. 14, 1976." Bookplate of Robert P. Kalter on the front pastedown sheet, else a fine, bright copy in dust jacket with red color on spine faded and some light professional restoration to the spine ends, corners, and extremities. This is a vibrant daybook on what can happen in a station house between 5:30 and 9 P.M. Told in fascinating detail about the everyday activities of a precinct police station in New York City. The Broadway stage play of the same name in 1949 starred Ralph Bellamy and Maureen Stapleton. The play was adapted by Kingsley for the 1951 William Wyler film that starred a young and very angry Kirk Douglas, Eleanor Parker, and William Bendix. The winner of the Edgar Award for Best Motion Picture of 1951. An important book, play, and film that became the prototype for many later movie and television crime dramas. Seller Inventory # 30375
