About this Item
First edition, first printing. One of a small amount of copies of the first printing to bear (applied to title-page) the themed publisher's bookplate that was SIGNED by both the Dutch author and the translator. It was announced, in August 2020, that this book was the winner of the prestigious 2020 International Booker Prize - making its author the youngest ever winner of the prize. The surprise choice culminated in the award's delay, because of the pandemic, and prior to the award announcement the author's debut novel had apparently sold fewer than a 1000 copies in the UK - which suggests a relatively small initial print run. The collector should be aware that the publisher then reprinted the book after the award announcement - but, oddly, retained the full number line of 1-10. However, the reprint edition (despite possessing a full strike line) is easy to distinguish as such since it bears endorsements to its front-cover, a different lay out and wording to the rear of the cover, and is also slightly smaller in format. This particular copy, of course, is the correct, true first edition - with no endorsements. Set against the stark backdrop of a dairy farm, "The Discomfort of Evening" was a best-seller in the Netherlands, and is described, by Kirkus Reviews, as "startling." The UK edition precedes the American release. Issued in softcover, as a PBO, with French flaps. Translated from the Dutch by Michele Hutchinson. A Very Fine copy. As New.
