About this Item
Very Good (covers nice & bright; contents clean & tight with edge of a few pages a little damaged). A lovely copy of a scarce book! Small 8vo., pictorial green cloth, stamped in gilt & black; 332 pages First Edition. Signed presentation from Bohan on the front endpaper: "To Mr. Albert K. Grafton, With the best wishes of Elizabeth Baker Bohan." With the ink name of "N.E. Grafton" on the same page. Bohan, who was also an artist, came to America from England in 1854 and lived mostly in Wisconsin, where she was a teacher. The is a novel about the un-Christian injustices of the American penal system- an unusual topic for a woman author back then. An uncommon book, especially signed by the author.
