Dan Collins, an American engineer building roads in Sarawak, Malaysia encounter an unusual culture made up of Iban, Malay, and Chinese
Reviews:
When people from different cultures meet, the results may be painful conflict or unifying comedy. This impressive collection of stories offers generous portions of both. All 12 stories are set in Sarawak, Malaysia, in the mid-1960s, and all focus on Dan Collins, an engineer on loan from the U.S. government. Encountering a rich mixture of ethnic types, Collins must battle the chickens who insist on roosting in his quarters, explain to a tribesman why the residents of San Francisco do not have a rice-spirit, and chastise a young American who goes native. Clarke provides colorful glimpses of an exotic land as well as sensitive portrayals of human experiences that transcend cultural differences. Albert E.
