Synopsis
When one of her star students is found murdered on school grounds, teacher Greta Gallagher weeds through a motley group of suspects--a nerdy math teacher, a surly janitor, and the handsome principal--to find the killer
Reviews
The ramifications of murder at a Los Angeles high school are explored in this uneven first novel featuring English teacher and girls' counselor Greta Gallagher. Greta, who discovers the body of Belinda Jackson, doesn't believe the popular student was strangled by her boyfriend, even after learning that Belinda had been trying to break up with the boy, whom the police arrest. An autopsy reveals that Belinda was pregnant; then her best friend is also murdered, and Greta begins to suspect unsavory custodian Rudy Smith of the killings. She confides her belief in the police who follow up on her tip about Rudy's false alibi. But before anyone can celebrate the murders' resolution, Greta receives a threatening note in her school mailbox and Rudy is killed. As the murders and the investigation wreak turmoil in the halls of McCormick High, Greta spins romantic fantasies about the recently widowed principal, with whom she eventually spends the night and even comes to suspect might be the killer. Inconsistencies of character and plot mar this lively but jejune debut.

Sub-par mystery debut, set in L.A., featuring McCormick High School English teacher/guidance-counselor Greta--who's intent on discovering who strangled two pretty teenagers (one of them pregnant--but not by the girl's boyfriend). Greta's first suspects lascivious janitor Rudy Smith, but then he's also killed, and so she focuses instead on new love Adam, the widowed school principal- -even though a necktie belonging to math teacher Stanley has been found in an incriminating place. While ignoring the advice of detectives and her own wisecracking teacher-chum Maxine (who's more interested anyhow in Greta's revitalized sex life than in the murders), Greta unwisely accepts a lift from the murderer.... Dull characters, a tediously transparent plot, and--despite Rosen's own schoolteacher background--a surprisingly superficial etching of her milieu. -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP.
