Original black cloth witth red spine lettering, in near fine condition, some slight rubbing, endpapers and pages very clean with no foxing, just some lght spotting on front text block, folding map of 'St Anthony's College' at rear as called for. Signed by the author on the title page. In a facsimile dustjacket. This first impression comes from the collection of John Cooper, the foremost authority on collecting detective fiction, and it contains a typed March 1983 letter from the author, in his real name of J.I.M.Stewart, thanking Cooper for sending him four of his early novels to sign, and professing surprise at the prices which first editions of his books were commanding. One of those books is the present copy of the author's first detective novel in which, drawing on his time as a don at Oxford University, he introduced the character of John Appleby of Scotland Yard, who would feature in many of his subsequent detective stories, eventually rising to the rank of Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, with a knighthood in his retirement. All the Appleby books were written under the name of Michael Innes. Extremely scarce with the author's signature.
