Signed by the author to the title page. Large Octavo. 192pp. Includes 75 black and white graphics (maps, figures, photos) and 27 colour plates. This book is in near fine condition. The black cloth boards are near fine, with light rubbing to the top edges of the front and rear boards and to the bottom of the spine. The gilt titling to the spine is bright. The pages are clean and the binding is tight. The dust jacket is in very good condition, with light bumping along the top edges, a small 4mm x 1mm chip to the rear top corner at the flap foldover, and minor shelfwear to the surfaces. The dust jacket is unclipped.

Why did Rome abandon Britain in the early 5th century? According to Neil Faulkner, the centralized, military-bureaucratic state, governed by a class of super-rich landlords and apparatchiks, had siphoned wealth out of the province, with the result that the towns declined and the countryside was depressed. When the army withdrew to defend the imperial heartlands, the remaining Romano-British elite succumbed to a combination of warlord power, barbarian attack, and popular revolt.
