Inscribed First Edition of observations on the rise of nationalism in Europe in the early 1930s and its unsettling effects on world democracy by one of the era's leading figures in American military and foreign policy, Henry L. Stimson. Between the William Howard Taft and Harry S Truman presidencies, Stimson held numerous critical posts including Secretary of War, Secretary of State, and Governor General of the Philippines. In perhaps the best illustration of the esteem with which he was held in his era, Stimson served as President Herbert Hoover's Secretary of State and as President Franklin Roosevelt's World War II-era Secretary of War. This copy is inscribed by Henry L. Stimson to a previous owner (a diplomat of the era) on the front endpaper. The inscription is dated Oct. 22, 1934. Red cloth with gilt titles. 88 pages.
