First edition. Large octavo. [12]pp. Sewn salmon-colored wrappers printed in black, text printed in red and black type. Covers are moderately toned and faded at extremities, with a short tear at upper edge, a very good or better copy, with tanning on blank endpapers offset from the flaps. Colophon states: "Thirty copies of this pamphlet have been set by hand in Garamond types and printed on Sterling wove by Horace G. Dawson, Jr. in the Typographic Laboratory of the State University of Iowa, with the kind assistance of Professor Harry Duncan." A scarce publication, the author's first published book, limited to just 30 copies, Inscribed by Wiseman to poet George Mackay Brown in year of publication: "George from Chris. 1960." The title page prints a three-line stanza of verse by George Mackay Brown stating: "Tomorrow The wave will weep like a widow on the rock, Or howl like Lear or laugh like a green child - George Mackay Brown". Unrecorded by *OCLC*, which lists no holdings and has no citation for this publication. Wiseman attended Cambridge and earned a Ph.D. at University of Strathclyde. Following his 1959 Fellowship in Creative Writing at University of Iowa, where he also taught English, he returned to Glasgow in 1963, becoming a founding member of the Department of English and a poetry reviewer for The Glasgow Review and The Glasgow Herald.
