First edition, stated First Printing Presentation copy, apparently to the book's editor, inscribed and signed and dated in the year of issue by the author as follows "Dear Mr. Proctor --- / You must [underscore] share with me whatever / credit or blame is attached to this story --- not / merely because you bought it, but [underscore] because you / wouldn't buy it until much [underscore] revision gave it / the present shape. Whatever its faults, it / lacks a thousand 'twould have had otherwise. / Sincerely, Gordon Young / February 14, 1933.". Textured red cloth with black lettering/decoration, top edge stained red as issued, light blue endpapers, 300 pages. Hubin [1984 Crime Fiction, page 437]. Good to Very Good copy with spine ends and fore-edge corners bumped, contents tight and clean, as usual, lacking the very scarce jacket. An uncommon first edition, rarely found signed. LR2/2E.
