This copy SIGNED by the author on the flyleaf, with "Carry on!", dated Sept. 19, 1984. The author was an emeritus professor of Bacteriology & Botany at the University of Wisconsin, who began studying dictyostelids in 1933, and worked on bettering penicillin production during World War Two. Light wear to book, corners bumped, neat ink name on free endsheet, minor smudging to pages; jacket shows minor wear, a few tiny tears & small chips, faint stain to front cover. Kenneth Raper tells how dictyostelids are isolated, cultivated, and conserved in the laboratory; how myxamoebae aggregate to form multicellular pseudoplasmodia; how fructifications arise by transformation of amoeboid cells into stalk cells and spores; and how similar cells can, under certain conditions, enter a sexual phase. For each known dictyostelid Professor Raper includes a complete description and photographic illustrations; one new species is described.
