This lovely first edition copy of the important collaboration between two of the founders of the "cyberpunk" school of science fiction was inscribed to prominent Southern California booksellers. Bruce Sterling added a quote: "'There is likely a good paper in this phenomenon,' mused Dr. Mallory," which I haven't seen in other, similarly signed books. As was his usual practice, Bruce added "1855" beneath the publisher's name. See, in addition, the photograph of the authors at the booksigning in La Jolla, CA where this was signed. This has been stored in this bookseller's nonsmoking household ever since, protected in an archival cover. A unique copy of this book.

In a Victorian England run by steam-powered computing engines and governed by an intellectual elite led by Prime Minister Byron, an ambitious young paleontologist comes into possession of a dangerous set of program cards and begins running for his life. This first collaboration between cyberpunk legends Gibson ( Neuroman cer , Ace, 1984) and Sterling ( Islands in the Net, LJ 6/15/88) represents an ingenious (though not entirely successful) tour-de-force, as cyberpunk and the Victorian adventure novel meet with a vengeance. Recommended.

Store description
A bookseller's passion is connecting people with books they'll love. To that end, I try to provide more than just a sales listing, but a description of what makes each book a special and unique item, maybe a little personal history of my relationship with the author, and of course, a detailed accounting of any flaws (hey, I'm a collector, too). I'm a long-time bookseller/author/publisher/editor with almost 40 years of experience in virtually every aspect of the book business, and I'm slowly liquidating my massive personal collection. The books are mostly high-quality modern first editions, primarily in the genres of SF/Fantasy, Horror, Crime/Mystery, Thriller, but assorted other gems as well. For more about my work, you can check my rarely updated website at jeffmariotte.com, and you can always drop me a line through ABE. Thanks for taking a look at my store.…
