Signed twice by editor Wallace Stegner, "the Dean of Western Writers"--once at the end of his introduction, and again at the head of his chapter, the book's first, "The Marks of Human Passage"--and thus particularly uncommon. An important contribution to the history of environmentalism and conservation as it was a savvy, full-on defense of Utah's Dinosaur National Monument, which was then threatened with being flooded by two dams. The book help set in motion a congressional vote that prohibited the proposed dams and set a precedent that no dams or other similar destruction would occur within the lands of the National Park System. Other contributors include Eliot Blackwelder, Olaus Murie and Joseph Penfold, Robert Lister, Otis "Dock" Marston, David Bradley, and Alfred A. Knopf. A generous spread of 36 pages of photos in color and black-and-white sets the scene at the book's front. Map endpapers of the Monument. Laid in is a pamphlet issued with that book that is titled "What Is Your Stake in Dinosaur?" and folds out to a single poster-size sheet. A very good book withfaint sunning to board edges, light wear to corners, and the slightest bend to boards. Previous owner s pencil inscription to upper edge of front free endpaper. In a very good pictorial jacket with light edge wear and a touch of fraying to spine crown. Uncommon found signed, especially signed twice. Seller Inventory # 1303
