About this Item
pp. [2], limitation leaf, [1], [i-vi], vii-xxi, [3], 405, [3]. Taurus 118. Octavo. Original cream half cloth/half paper binding, ruled in gilt. 93 photographic illustrations on 45 plates, five full page. Printed on Strathmore permanent rag paper. Several pages are uncut. Scarce. A very good copy. In contrast to the earlier European expeditions to the Antarctic, American ventures were large and well-funded. Little America, a generously supplied base, was constructed on the Ross Ice Shelf in 1929. Explorations involved not only sea and land observations, but the use of planes as well, and Richard Byrd and three companions completed the first flight over the South Pole. After such a triumphant and well publicized event, Byrd returned to the Antarctic from 1933 - 1935. This book documents the controversial adventures of the five months he spent alone in Little America, at times in temperatures below -76 F. Number 208 of 500 copies. Limited signed edition. Please note that this volume came from the collection of polar historian Marty Greene. Seller Inventory # 143705
