Created in Amsterdam in December 1973 by American artist Paul Thek and Dutch photographer and designer Edwin Klein, Document 2 and Document 3 follow the pair's first collaborative work, Document 1, which was jointly published by the Stedelijk Museum and the Moderna Museet in 1969. In Document 2 and 3 two hardcover volumes; one in black and white, the other in color - Klein photographs the results of Thek's efforts to turn his personal notebooks into works of art. Thek s diaries are full of philosophical musings, poems, sketches and watercolors, becoming conceptual still lives as he strews old photographs, crystals, fruit peels and other objects across and around the pages. In the second half of Document 3, Thek s experiments become more intrusive, and he ultimately sets the notebook on fire. Document 2 and 3 were not seen by the public until Janos Gat Gallery in New York published this boxed, numbered edition of 350 copies, signed by Klein, as its first multiple. Each book includes a foreword by art critic Gary Indiana and contributions by Toni Brunink and Aart Klein. The publication was accompanied by an exhibition of unique prints, on view from April 19th to September 24th, 2005.
