About this Item

Description:

As new condition dark blue linen boards with gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Preliminary Page Note re: "Creators"; Author Dedication and Author's Note. Illustrated with black-and-white drawings plus black-and-white front and rear endpaper drawings. Signed and dated ('97) by the author, Peter Mayle, with blue pen at the upper right corner of the first free front endpaper. "This is a diary, of a sort. But since it is well known that dogs have no sense of time, it is a sporadic, haphazard grab-bag that has little chronological basis. Instead, it offers some reflections on the relationship between man and dog, and the occasional revelation about the human condition as seen from a different perspective - that is, approximately knee height. The author, Boy, is a pure-bred paranoid, labouring under delusions of grandeur, combined with an acute persecution complex that manifests itself at tactically convenient moments. He is a character of rich intricacy. His journal, falling somewhere between Proust and Eeyore, is often slanderous and relentlessly self-absorbed. Quotations from the great sages are interspersed with more practical dog matters, so that we find apercus by Voltaire or Machiavelli cheek by jowl with hints on dealing with clumsy and undisciplined human feet under the dinner table. Full of wit and humour, and illustrated lavishly throughout with cartoons by Edward Koren, A Dog's Life, with its unique literary voice and frequently offensive opinions, introduces a canine of truly unforgettable character." - from the inner front jacket flap.
