Newlove had already published four well-regarded novels, but was thwarted when he tried to publish this controversial study of his fellow authors. Raeburn, no stranger to controversy - he had served two years in prison for his involvement with sending explicit material through the mail from his family's Falstaff Press - was eager to publish the book, and indeed it is now considered by most to be Newlove's most important book.
