About this Item
Hardcover with DJ. Black cloth with yellow lettering and borders. Colorful original DJ present, but with chips and closed tears, worn edges and discoloration on the spine. 287 pages + 24 pages publisher's catalogue (dated Autumn 1933). No date on title page or copyright page. Scarce English edition of Merritt's fantasy novel, originally published in 1932. Pages 281 to the end have been crossed out & it looks as though they were once taped or pasted shut, but then were re-opened. Inscription on the blank page opposite the start of chapter 1 says, "To W. Karig, One of the few I'd want to read This is my own ending to my dweller in his own mirage, sincerely A. Merritt." At the end of the book an envelope has been pasted to the rear endpaper, and in the envelope are 2 typed pages (somewhat crudely folded) with Merritt's preferred ending to the novel. In addition, there is a letter (with envelope) from Merritt to Walter Karig (Newark Evening News) tucked inside. Dated July 1937, mailed from New York. Merritt wrote Seven Footprints to Satan, The Face of the Abyss, The Moonpool and several others. Abraham Grace Merritt was inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 1999. He died in 1943. Please email with questions or to request photos. Seller Inventory # R-161
