About this Item
Inscribed first printing of this Napoleonic tale of adventure on the high seas, with illustrations inspired by the art of soldiers of the period presented to the author by the illustrator. Published the year after his Caldecott Medal win, THE EMPEROR AND THE DRUMMER BOY showcases Sidjakov's unique blend of modernism and awareness of more vernacular artistic traditions. This copy is inscribed by Sidjakov to Ruth Robbins, the book's author and the wife of the owner of the Parnassus Press (and, apparently, a very good cook). A wonderful association between these two figures who together won the 1961 Caldecott Medal for their book BABOUSHKA AND THE THREE KINGS. 10'' x 8''. Original color pictorial boards. Original price-clipped color pictorial dust jacket. Illustrated in color. [40] pages. Inscribed by Sidjakov to verso of front flyleaf to Robbins, "To Ruth / I wish my illustrations / would be as good / as her cooking." Jacket with a hint of edgewear, one tiny closed tear. Sharp. Fine in very good plus dust jacket. Seller Inventory # 47896
