Handwritten title page states: "An important Collection of Genealogical Papers by Alexander Sinclair chiefly relating to the Case of the Earldom of Mar. Printed for Private Circulation and Presented by the Author to his friend John Stuart LLD Principal Register of Deeds, Her Majesty's Register House, Edinburgh, with autographed handwritten letters by A.S. 1875-1878. Alexander Sinclair was born in Edinburgh in 1795 to SirJohn Sinclair, of Ulbster (the provocateur of the first Statistical Account of Scotland), and Diana, daughter of Lord Macdonald of the Isles. Alexander received his education at Musselburgh School and Edinburgh University. He was then a magistrate in the East India's service in the Presidencies of Bombay and Madras. After this, he came back to Scotland and devoted himself to antiquarian and genealogical research. In his later years, he was an ardent supporter of John Goodeve-Erskine in the Earl of Mar controversy of 1875. He died in Edinburgh in 1877, in his 83rd year." Also a loose handwritten letter to Woodward from the Earl of Mar (signed) at Grosvenor Crescent Edinburgh (1886). Most papers have gift inscriptions to Stuart from Sinclair. John Stuart was born in November 1813 at Forgue, Aberdeenshire, and educated at Aberdeen University, and in 1836 became a member of the Aberdeen Society of Advocates. In 1853 he was appointed one of the official searchers of records in the Register House, Edinburgh, and in 1873 became principal keeper of the register of deeds. In 1854 he was appointed secretary of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, and was central to its operation.
