DESCRIPTION: pagination: 392, size 215 x 136mm, with advert leaf before the frontispiece, frontispiece and 25 plates, plus one folding map and one map in text, bound by Zaehnsdorf for Asprey's in full green crushed morocco, sides with double gilt fillet borders with corner floral ornaments, spine floral gilt within gilt compartments and raised bands, date at foot of spine, wide inner gilt floral dentelles, matching green marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. First Edition with presentation inscription to front leaf 'To Herbert Morrison from Winston S Churchill 1943.' Condition: Minor signs of use only. A near fine copy. FURTHER COMMENTS Evidence from a Sotheby's sale of 1988 indicates that the copy of this book presented by Churchill to his Home Secretary - Herbert Stanley Morrison during the Second World War was in fact the 1942 printing rather than this first printing of 1930, suggesting that two copies have been combined in this rebound form, the genuine Winston Churchill presentation from 1943 added to the 1930 first printing then put into a fine binding. This kind of 'marriage' to produce an ideal copy was not unusual in the 1980's, although frowned upon today. Fortunately we have been able to identify the volume's likely history. Overall this remains to be a wonderful copy of one of Churchill's finest books with important if mixed provenance. Seller Inventory # 000066
