The same thing must happen with every avid reader: you read a novel and remark to yourself that you enjoyed it, it was unusual, it was different, you'd recommend it to certain people, and then you expect to have it largely slip from your mind. Only it doesn't. Years later you find that, if not the intricacies of the plot, the book's ambiance, its aura if you like, is still impinging on your memory. It won't quite leave you. So it was for me and this book. Rene Denfeld's subsequent books (this one was her first novel, coming after four non-fiction works), were the pair of "The Child Finder" and its sequel, "The Butterfly Girl", and "Sleeping Giants". They are quite memorable, but there's still something about the tone of "The Enchanted" that I find special. This copy of the first printing is signed by the author on the title page. There is one slightly softened corner, and there's a security sticker on the rear pastedown. Otherwise a fine copy in a near fine, very slightly rubbed dust jacket.
