About this Item
Spine faded, covers slightly marked, top edge mildly spotted. Inscribed by the author to Lord David Cecil, "for dear David - love & gratitude AL". "I owe more to David Cecil than to anyone else," wrote A.L. Rowse in the long opening memoir in his volume Friends and Contemporaries, "- except, I suppose, my parents and my old Headmaster, who saw to it that I won scholarships to take me to Oxford. I learned more from David than from anyone else in my life - certainly than from any dons. For he had a marked didactic gift, he was a marvellous teacher, naturally and unconsciously, as well as professionally as tutor and professor - even apart from his writing . . ." As an undergraduate Rowse was in the year below Cecil at Christ Church. Seller Inventory # DC100226
