Tall octavo approx. 10 inches tall, wide margins with page edges untrimmed; bound in half dark red leather over marbled boards, spine in 6 compartments, title and decorations in gilt; marbled endpapers, library call letters in white at base of spine, bookplate of "Joseph M. Gleason" on front pastedown, another small older bookplate in blue above it [see photo]; engraved frontispiece, paginated 1-298, then 4 pages of "Sommaire", the middle pages numbered 280-281 [ie. 300-301], the first and last not numbered; pages clean and bright with only very light occasional foxing; two other very fine full-page engravings, one in sepia; inscribed in upper corner of the half title "a Monsieur Guizot . . . de l'auteur", presumably to the famous French historian Francois Guizot.
