About this Item

Description:

Limited issue of excerpts from Kerouac's experimental novel which wouldn't be published in its entirety until 1972. This exceptional copy is signed by Kerouac and no less than 13 other important figures both in the book and his life Allen Ginsberg and William S. Burroughs need no introduction, and both have signed here. InVisions of Cody,Burroughs is "Bull Hubbard" and Ginsberg is Irwin Garden. Burroughs has signed "For Jack" and Ginsberg inscribes on the half title: "This is a rare edition of a rare volume of poetic genius." Kerouac's agent, Sterling Lord, who was instrumental in the publishing ofOn the Roadhas signed. The book is signed by Ed White, whom Kerouac met at Columbia University, and suggested Kerouac carry a sketchbook to capture fleeting prose and start "sketching in the streets" in 1951. White is the inspiration for the character, Ed Gray. Also signing is Al Hinkle, who was in the car inOn the Road.InVisions of Cody,he is "Slim Buckle" All of the Cassadys, save Kerouac's close friend Neal have signed: Carolyn, Cathy, Jami, and John. They are portrayed as the Pomeroys inVisions of Cody. Helen Weaver, Kerouac's girlfriend in 1956-57, that crucial time just beforeOn the Roadwas published, has signed. Michael McClure and Lawrence Ferlinghetti, both important figures in the movement as well as close with Kerouac's circle, have signed. Incredibly, Lucien Carr aka "Julien Love" has also signed this copy. Carr was a childhood friend of William S. Burroughs in St. Louis. He later befriended Ginsberg and Kerouac while at Columbia, introducing the two, and then both of them to Burroughs. Ginsberg said "Lou was the glue" that held that New York circle together. We have not personally witnessed the signatures of Kerouac, Ginsberg, Burroughs, and Lucien Carr all in one place. And as they are accompanied by so many others in their circle, this book is truly an artifact of the literary movement. . 8vo, 128pp. Signed by Kerouac at the colophon as issued. Additionally signed by Sterling Lord, Ed White, Al Hinkle, William S. Burroughs, Helen Weaver, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Carolyn Cassady, Cathy Cassady, Jami Cassady, John Cassady, Michael McClure, Allen Ginsberg, and Lucien Carr mainly on the title page. Publisher's purple cloth backed cream paper boards with lettering designed by Kerouac himself, in glassine jacket. Book with some toning to boards and wear along edges. Jacket chipped and with a few tears. Very good, with prospectus slip laid in First edition, number 213 of 750 signed copies. Seller Inventory # 7700
