"The book makes a stronger impression than any of Mr. Lindsay's previous volumes. In Scots or English Mr. Lindsay is a poet of talk and impressions, vivid, tangential, never compressed enough. He is an enjoyable poet without ever being quite a memorable one" (G.S. Fraser, reviewing the book anonymously in The Times Literary Supplement). Tom Scott was the youngest poet, apart from the editor himself (six weeks his junior) and Donald MacRae (the sociologist, three years their junior) included in Lindsay's 1946 Scottish Renaissance anthology, Modern Scottish Poetry.
