Reviews

The stories in this collection, winner of Pushcart's Editors' Book Award, take place on Cape Breton Island in northeastern Nova Scotia. The descriptions of land, light, and sea are moving, but the portraits of the farmers and fishermen who inhabit the island's small villages are truly masterful. The stories mourn the passing of a simpler way of life; the young men who leave lose their way in the world and return to discover Cape Breton changed. In "Poplars," for instance, Neil returns from California and contrives to take his disabled uncle Lauchie to Lauchie's old farmhouse. When they arrive they discover the house has been brutally, randomly vandalized. Concerned with the immigrant experiencethese Scottish settlers have found a new life that does not hold for the next generationMacDonald writes of disruption and loss with brusque tenderness. Marcia Tager, Tenafly, N.J.
