Text block's top edge darkened; toning to fore-edge, bottom edge, and endpapers. Front pastedown features O'Casey family Mississippi and Ireland genealogical-themed bookplate along with pencil signature "Casey" at top center; five-line ink inscription "To | Dr and Mrs Albert E. Casey | with very best wishes | Cordially yours - | Florence R. Sabin" on paper slip tipped-in at top of front free endpaper; red ink number stamp at title page's bottom center which seems to have been Dr. Casey's personal library catalog# (per other number stamps among books from his collection); a few spots of minor soiling to interior leaves which otherwise remain clean. Binding is firm. Book was acquired from the estate of Birmingham, Alabama pathologist, bibliophile, and genealogist Dr. Albert Eugene Casey (1903-1982) who served as director of laboratories at Birmingham Baptist Hospitals from 1942-1972. A noted medical researcher in her own right, Dr. Casey's wife Joanne Gunn Casey (1919-2023) worked on the polio vaccine in the 1940s-1950s before joining her husband in studying genetic and hematological links to disease susceptibility. The aforementioned O'Casey bookplate heralds Dr. Casey's interest in the family genealogies of his Irish immigrant forebearers. A protege of Franklin Mall and a renowned researcher, Dr. Florence Rena Sabin (1871-1953) was the first woman appointed to the faculty of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, was the first woman elected to membership of the National Academy of Sciences, and the first woman to be elected president of the American Association of Anatomists.
