First edition. Octavo. 368pp. Illustrated in black and white with a frontispiece portrait of the author. Green cloth stamped in gilt. Spine lettering a touch faded but easily readable, a near fine copy of a cheaply produced book. inscribed by the author in the year of publication: "Compliments of the author - John P. Green to William R. Hopkins Esq. Cleveland, O. Nov.: 21/23 (followed by a line in Latin from Virgil)". The recipient is mentioned in the text of the book on page 111 as one of the author's high school teachers. There are several small corrections in the text, very likely in the author's hand. John Paterson Green was an African-American lawyer, businessman, and politician who lived most of his life in Cleveland, Ohio. He was the first African-American elected to office in Cleveland, first African-American elected to the Ohio state Senate, and is known as "The Father of Labor Day": he introduced the bill that established Labor Day as an Ohio state holiday, and the U.S. Congress made it a national holiday in 1894. He is also the author of *Essays on Miscellaneous Subjects* (published anonymously, 1866) and *Recollections of the Inhabitants, Localities, Superstitions, and Kuklux Outrages of the Carolinas* (1880). *Brignano* 145; not in *Catalogue of the Blockson Collection* or *Work*.
