About this Item
Biographical sketches of men involved in the American Revolution - those who inspired it and those who waged it, including George III, Louis XVI, Lord North, the Earl of Chatham, Edmund Burke, Burgoyne, Cornwallis, Washington, Franklin, Samuel Adams, Hamilton, La Fayette; with separate comments on Truth and Great Men. Guedalla was an English barrister & failed politician who found success as an an author later in life, becoming known for his wit & aphorisms. These biographical portraits of notable men are Guedalla's attempt to flesh them out beyond the usual hagiographies & exposés, which the author considers "stiff". Published in 1926 in England as 'Independence Day: A Sketchbook' and earlier (at least partly) in Harper's Magazine, this is the first American edition (first printing), with no additional printings listed. Hardcover in jacket as pictured, SIGNED by the author on the half-title. Book shows a little wear, corners lightly bumped & chipped, minor fading & one dent to the edges; fragile jacket tanned & chipped with minor scuffs, creases; pages show light foxing, mostly adjacent to the plates. Text clean; [1], xi, blank, 302 pages, index, 12 b/w portraits, as called for. Size: Large Octavo. Seller Inventory # v0524
