Signed presentation by the author to Faulkner scholar and professor Michael Millgate on the half title page. Michael Millgate published his treatise "The Achievement of William Faulkner" in 1966. Book has some light toning to the spine. The jacket has some wear and tears to the edges, a chip to the lower front panel and top of the back panel with a closed tear along the spine lettering. Cowley wrote to Faulkner in 1944 suggesting a collaboration on a book of Faulkner's writing under the "Portable" series similar to Cowley's recently completed "The Portable Hemingway". Faulkner responded positively and thus the project began. Included in this book is letters between the two writers on the selection process and their subsequent meetings. Faulkner trusted Cowley and the letters and encounters reveal interesting facets of Faulkner's reticent nature. When the book "The Portable Faulkner" was published in 1946, Faulkner's reputation grew amongst critics and readers, eventually leading to winning The Nobel Prize for Literature in 1949.
