About this Item

Description:

Fine; a little bumping to head and tail of spine; offsetting to endpapers from the ephemera tipped in and laid in there; else As New. In a Fair dust jacket with wear to edges and folds; spine tanned and stained; in a brodart sleeve. First Edition. Inscribed (but not signed) by the author on the first free page: "For Elizabeth, after an unforgettable first visit to Santa Barbara, 1937" (attached to rear pastedown is the bookstore label of Tecolote Bookshop, still operating in Santa Barbara); tipped in below is a portrait of the author cut from a magazine, and the notation "Died - March 15 - 1942". On the front pastedown is tipped in the 1939 birth announcement of the author's child Hanna. Originally attached to the rear pastedown with transparent tape, now laid in, is a photo of the author and her husband; written below is "Rachel & Arthur [Pederson] on Sutton Island" and on the back "This is the nicest Easter card I could send you - not very good, but taken just by our house on Sutton Island the summer they were married - 1935." The author spent her summers at her house on Sutton Island in Maine during the 1020s and 30s. Also laid in is a twice-folded card that reprints the author's short poem "The Uncharted"; on the facing page is the inscription "This was written and published very recently and we [?] it by chance. We are sending it to many friends". Below is printed "Reprinted from The New Yorker, March 14, 1942". Since Rachel died the following day, the inscription is probably by Arthur.
