Original illustrated unclipped dust jacket. Beautifully, boldly signed and inscribed "Inscribed especially for Lucky Millender with admiration for his happy music--- Sincerely-- Langston Hughes New York July 20th, 1948 " on front free endpaper. Contains illustrations by iconic graphic designer Edward McKnight Kauffer. Hughes first collection of poetry after settling permanently in Harlem, where he would become known as "Harlem's Poet Laureate". Shakespeare in Harlem is a garland of verses about the "dream deferred" to which Lorraine Hansberry refers in Raisin in the Sun. Various characters weave in and out of his verses, as Hughes ponders the life that pours through the streets, bars and tenements around him. Also included are a black and white silver gelatin photograph of Lucky Millinder and His Orchestra circa 1930 and sheet music for "I Love You Yes I Do" with black and white image of Lucky Millinder on cover.
