Nick Bottom, un ancien policier de Denver, à peu près ruiné, et qui vit d'allocations sociales, comme la plupart des Américains, est engagé par le multimilliardaire japonais Hiroshi Nakamura pour reprendre l'enquête sur l'assassinat de son fils Keigo et de la compagne de celui-ci, survenu six ans plus tôt. Nick a enquêté à l'époque sur cette affaire mais depuis la mort de sa femme, Dara, dans un accident de voiture, il a quitté la police parce qu'il est devenu accro au flashback, une drogue illégale, réputée avoir été inventée dans un laboratoire israélien. Le flashback permet de revivre des souvenirs parfaits (en ce qui concerne Nick ceux de sa vie avec Dara, qui était policière comme lui). Toute l'Amérique s'adonne au flashback : c'est pour les plus jeunes le moyen de revivre leurs pires turpitudes et pour les plus vieux celui de retourner dans le monde idéal d'autrefois. Car l'Amérique, en faillite financière, politique et morale, s'est désintégrée. Le Nouveau Mexique a été envahi par les hispaniques de la reconquista et la Californie risque de l'être.
